Abundant Water Supply for the Plastics and Rubber Industry

Our state is home to nearly 1,000 polymer and materials companies. Ohio ranks number one nationally in employing people in the plastic and rubber industry.

Leading companies in these industries that operate within about a 30-minute drive from Cuyahoga County include Avient (formerly PolyOne), Goodyear and Bridgestone-Firestone.

Our abundant freshwater from Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes, is a key resource for these heavily water-dependent industries as water is used in plastics molding and forming plants to cool or heat the plastic products, and also to clean the surfaces of and finish the products.

In addition, approximately 98 percent of water in the rubber industry is used for cooling gases and liquids and to condense vapors from distillation columns and reactors.

Water soluble polymers are emerging as a high-growth sector and an abundant water supply is key to this growth.

The companies in this sector also benefit from being near the Utica and Marcellus Shale play, which Ohio supports. High concentrations of Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs) in Northeast Ohio provide an abundant supply of low-cost feedstock.

Our nearby research and academic institutions, such as Case Western Reserve University, offer expertise, training and talent in polymer and plastics engineering in Ohio.
