We have tremendous strength and experience in chemicals. Ohio ranks fourth nationwide in employment in the chemical industry, behind only Texas, California and Illinois. And of those states, Ohio has the highest concentration of workers in the chemicals industry.

Notable companies in these industries that operate their businesses here include Sherwin-Williams, Lubrizol, Ferro Corp. and BASF.

Our region provides strength across the entire supply chain – from extraction to processing and manufacturing to distribution – and chemical companies benefit from access to markets, customers, innovation and a skilled, knowledgeable workforce. Businesses have all the resources they need – water being one of the most critical – to thrive in their established markets and expand into new ones.

The value of our water resources, and our region’s expertise around it, benefits the chemical industry because ultra-purification is a key requirement. Just as importantly, our wastewater treatment facilities have deep expertise working with manufacturers in these industries and all of them meet federal regulations.

Additionally, our water access is among the cleanest, closest and least expensive nationwide and our nearby research institutions, such as NASA Glenn Research Center, offer valuable support and expertise. We also have ample port capacity and direct ocean shipping via the St. Lawrence Seaway.

The companies in this sector also benefit from being near the Utica and Marcellus Shale play, which Ohio supports. High concentrations of Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs) in Northeast Ohio provide an abundant supply of low-cost feedstock.
